Kathleen Jacobs: AVION THE BONNIER GALLERY, Miami, 2019

The Bonnier Gallery is pleased to announce Kathleen Jacobs’ debut solo exhibition in Miami entitled “AVION.” The opening reception will be held on October 3, 2019 at 6:30 PM at ...The Bonnier Gallery. This exhibition of recent oil paintings will be on view through November 23rd in the main gallery space.

The natural landscape that surrounds us is the result of the epic battles between the elements. Our ancient ancestors recognized these forces at play and in mythopoetic language captured the essence in story and symbol. In almost every culture, the origin story involves forces of nature --- water in particular. Jacobs’ paintings have a quality of presence that recognizes the unifying flow which connect the trees, roots, wind, rain, clouds, sky, and human experience.

As Kathleen focuses on the micro-scale of the landscape, she reveals the macro-scale of the dynamic flow of patterns which surround us. Avion brings forth the nation that resonates in the myth; everything is connected. We are surrounded by the continually unfolding terrain of an origin story.

The title “Avion”, as well as all the titles of Jacobs’ paintings, comes from an intersection on an instrument aviation map. These intersections have no place; they are simply abstract places along abstract routes which can only be found by electronic instruments installed in airplanes. They are a perfect metaphor for the surface of Jacob’s paintings.[+] Show More

WORD PLAY looks at how six contemporary artists have specifically used and questioned how language ...functions and how meaning is comprehended. They use language as an actual medium—like charcoal and paint, wood and steel—exploring the paradoxes of language. Sometimes their work is telegraphic; other times almost narrative.

These artists all make us think about language and how we use (and abuse) it, including the acts of speaking, reading and looking; representation and abstraction, and how they cross over. As Smithson later wrote, “A word outside of the mind is a set of ‘dead letters’.” WORD PLAY challenges the viewer to bring life and meaning to letters, punctuation and text.

The art-making techniques range from the traditional to the technological. Fiona Banner and Benjamin Zellmer Bellas often use texts—from full sentences to entire stories. Banner transforms a number of works from a popular culture perspective into fine art. Bellas uses performance, poetry and sculpture in combination to address the experience of understanding.

Mel Bochner is best known for his text-based paintings that are at the intersection of linguistic and visual representation. In contrast, David Moreno’s works on paper symbolically ask, “How are words made?” His work often hides or layers information, developing a visual poetry compelling the viewer to decipher it.

Kay Rosen is an artist with formal linguistic credentials. She works with words and punctuation almost exclusively, testing definitions, challenging visual understanding and, frequently, commenting on social issues using a wry humor. Damon Zucconi uses software programming “languages”—including speech and handwriting synthesizers—to create art that is more-or-less readable.

The Bonnier Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Richard Höglund entitled Symposium. “A painting, like drinking together, is a strange attractor for thoughts ...of a higher order. A painting lets our thoughts smolder in the embers of ancient fires lit in the pursuit of truth, in the pursuit of the divine”—Richard HöglundIn Höglund’s latest suite of paintings the artist uses wine as his primary medium, in conversation with the famed 11th century quatrains of The Rubáiyát, by Persian astronomer and poet Omar Khayyam. In these works, Höglundutilizes experimental materials and techniques to heighten interconnected rituals of divinity and collective celebration. Citing figures as varied as Shiva and Dionysus as inspiration, Höglund’s wine paintings encourage a collaborative interpretation that amplify the mystical and the poetic. The Bonnier Gallery is pleased to present Redux, our first solo exhibition by American

artist Cordy Ryman. The exhibition will open on Saturday, January ...25th from 6 – 9pm and will be on view through March 14th, 2020.

For the past twenty-five years Cordy Ryman’s work has been rooted in manipulating materials across a wide range of scale, including wall, floor, corner works, and installations. Painting primarily on wood allows Ryman the versatility to expand the work’s viability. The result provides a consistency in form and practice that lends itself to evolving motifs that are only recognizable overtime. The process and method that he has developed can be viewed as a constellation of constant and careful reiteration.

The works on view in Redux are composed of elements that existed in previous forms and often had different functions. Reacting to the nature of the material and the relationship between the material and the space around it, Ryman has adapted and rendered the material into new forms. Ryman explains, “When the requirements for the previous forms cease to be, the histories contained in the materials begin to break down and return to a state that entails a redux.”

The primary focal point of the exhibition is Ryman’s large-scale, site-specific Root Vine Pyramid. The corner installation is composed of two-by-fours that have been repurposed and cut into over a thousand parts resembling bricks. Painted in vibrant hues of red, blue, green, and white, the components are assembled on two adjacent walls to form a pyramid.

Another important body of work within the exhibition is known as the Dimar works. The wood, originally in the form of sixteen-foot joists, was reclaimed from a masonry building located nearby Ryman’s studio in Brooklyn, New York. Built in 1920 as a clinic, the building was demolished in 2018, and the joists were gifted to the artist. In these works, Ryman explores ways in which the material could be reconstituted into significant forms and continue to exist as viable entities. Ryman cut and assembled his material into free- floating works mounted on the wall, grids, and stacked towers.[+] Show More
